Labour lollies
Today I made labour lollies for my client who is due in the next couple of weeks.
Its a good idea to eat in labour to keep your energy up, but not everyone feels like eating much. Its also mid summer here (although not very hot at the momment) so I thought lollies would be nice to make instead of labourade.
In this recipe I used-
1 fairtrade pineapple
1 pomegranate
1 large teaspoon of Manuka honey
half a teaspoon of salt
Rescue remedy
(You could also include a couple of crushed up calcium/magnesium tablets but I didn’t because I didn’t have any)
Blend up in a smoothie maker and pour into lolly ice trays, then freeze
I made another batch which included half a tin of coconut milk
Why these ingredients?
Pineapple is commonly suggested as a way to encourage labour to start naturally as it contains an enzyme called bromelain that acts like prostoglandins to soften the cervix.
Pomegranate seeds containĀ Beta-sitosterol, a recent study by the enter for Better births in Liverpool found that it could be used as a natural stimulant to encourage the uterus to contract during labour.
Salt for a good electrolyte balance
Rescue remedy is a Bach flower essence to ease fear and worry
Manuka honey for energy and healing
Coconut milkĀ is made mostly of medium-chain fats called lauric oils, which is similar to the lauric oils found in breastmilk. Lauric oils are natural enhancers of the immune system. The medium chain fatty acids are rapidly absorbed and burned as energy like carbohydrates
You could also add in raspberry leaf tea
I hope she likes them!
